The Social Dilemma: Documentary

Review by Shahzaib Ikram

This Documentary is based on the social media dilemma, explaining the Darker side of Social Media Organizations. In this Documentary, experts and former Employees of big social media firms are discussing the Dilemma within this system. Here we will put a light on the conversation of these experts on The Social Media Dilemma. Firstly, let me tell you, what is a dilemma. Well here, Dilemma refers to the problems (moreover Ethical Problems) within the system of Social Media firms and Companies such as Google, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Tik Tok, etc. Usually, people are not aware of the inside structure of these Social Media Sites. So, I have brought this article to deeply discuss the fundamental business model of some of the most successive and wealthiest companies of all time

The social dilemma is indeed a very informative and helpful documentary that will change your perspective about social media and how it systematically works.  Common people are not aware of the Complexities and mechanism of these Social Empires. We all Assume that Social Media is a tool that we use when in need of it. This is the first misconception that we have. Social media is more than a tool that you use daily. What is a tool? Well! A tool is something that makes a particular task easy to perform. You use a tool to help yourself when it’s required. Now! Social Media is a tool? Social media is not a tool waiting to be used, it has its own goals aims, and targets using your Psychology of the user to change his thinking ability about different things without letting him know. In other words, it is gradually changing your behavior and perception of the world.

Initially, some systematic changes were happening around the world because of these platforms (Google, etc.) for example The world became a global village, the research process became very easy and effective, we easily travel anywhere using online maps, we get the news and information very quickly, etc. In 2006, Google was considered an incredibly useful service. However, now the money machine has replaced the old helpful services. We will put a light on the new side of the coin that was not clearly visible before. Unfortunately, the present age has moved from the information age to the dis-information age. According to a former researcher at Facebook, fake news and fake messages travel 6 times faster than the true news. This is a fact which is within this structure.

The present structure of social media companies contains the following elements

Data Tracking

Artificial Intelligence

Growth Hacking

Attention Extraction Model

Data Tracking:

Data tracking is the biggest ethical concern that the former employees of Social Media companies have with the present mechanical structure of social media companies. The documentary consists of experts and former employees of Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram were at high posts and designations during their Jobs. They are well aware of the technicalities and problems that exist within the whole system. According to the experts we are being tracked by social media sites every time. Everything we are doing on social media (online) is being watched, tracked, monitored, and recorded. They know everything about us. They use this data to study our behavior and Nature. There is the classic saying, “if you are not paying for the product then you are the product”. This is the best example to explain the mechanism of these companies.  They get our personal data without our consent and sell it to the advertisers selling out time and our attention. This is the business model used by most companies to make money. Some way or the other human ethics and values are damaged through these acts. But money matters the most for these organizations.

Artificial Intelligence (AI): Data that was stolen through our social media accounts was transferred to heavy computers. These computers are very intelligent and effective. They use social intelligence to study the behaviors of users. These computers are very complicated to understand. According to a former researcher at Facebook, they have thousands of such computers in big halls, underwater, underground, etc. These computers are recording everything that we do on social media. Such devices analyze our data and create a dummy of us that has all the characteristics we acquire. AI sends us ads depending upon our interests.

Growth Hacking:

This is an entire discipline that is there to change the way we think. Growth hacking basically Hacks your Psychology. AI studies your behavior and then change your thinking abilities gradually without letting you know. They can affect the real-world behavior of users without leaving a clue. Users are nothing more than a puppet that moves on their fingertips. The hacking technique gets deeper and deeper in your brain with the passage of seconds. This increases your depression and tension level. You become curious to watch more and more of the provided content. They make money using such tactics. These services are all killing men and causing men to kill themselves. Such technologies are created by humans but with time these computers get out of our hands and human themselves are becoming victims of these technologies. This is a big problem that we are going to face in the future. The human had lost control over these computers and these computers are now controlling us.

Attention Extraction Model:

The name Attention Extraction Model itself explains the process. The whole media model runs to attain the attention of users. Media companies are putting their best to engage users for a maximum amount of screen time. They are introducing different new feathers in their apps that can easily attract a user to use the site for relatively more time. Such models are destroying the social fabric of society leading to a disastrous future ahead. Another thing that is leading our young generation to a dead end is the comparison of complexity. They compare their lifestyle with others on social media. This is causing depression and anxiety. Not everyone can afford a luxurious lifestyle, but everyone can afford social media. When you cannot get something that someone has, this causes hypertension, which later leads to wreck your life. To stay connected is out need but to copy someone’s lifestyle is nothing more than a selfish act. Social media want to change your norms and behavior so that they can make money from it.

Can we change Social Media?

Well changing social media requires Governments assistance and a massive public pressure, but we can take smaller baby steps, deleting all useless social media accounts that are playing a part in wasting our precious time and energy. This would be a positive step in making world a good place to live.
